Jerzy Jozef Nowak was born on April 9, 1950 in Ruszcza, Sandomierz, Poland, son of Karol and Marianna (Matusak) Nowak. He attended elementary school in Sulisławice and Minor Seminary (high school) in Poznań. Fr. George professed first vows in the Congregation of the Resurrection on August 26, 1967 in Radziwiłłów Mazowiecki. On June 29, 1973, he professed perpetual vows in Krakow, where he attended the Major Seminary. Fr. George obtained a Master of Divinity degree from S.S. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan. He was ordained to the priest-hood in Chicago, Illinois on May 17, 1975 at St. Mary of the Angels Church by Cardinal Cody.
Fr. George’s first assignment was as Associate Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Kitchener. Two years later, he was assigned as Associate Pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Hamilton. He returned to Sacred Heart Parish in 1979, and was named Pastor in 1982. After ten years as pastor, he pursued studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he obtained a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.A. in Religion and Culture. He also did Post Graduate studies in Inculturation at Fordham University in New York. After completing his studies, Fr. George served as Pastor of St. Stanislaus Parish in Hamilton and St. Teresa of Avila Parish in Elmira. After a sabbatical year in Jerusalem, where he earned a post graduate certificate from the Centre for Biblical Formation, Fr. George was named Pastor of St. Mary Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows Parish in Kitchener. He has served there since 2006. Besides his parish ministry, Fr. George worked extensively with university students and young adults in the area.
